Toe Laser

Toenail fungus can be embarrassing, annoying and even painful.

Genesis is a new laser perfected for safely and effectively treating onychomycosis (toenail fungus). By targeting the fungus directly, GenesisPlus gets to the source of the problem immediately. Tiny pulses of light from the Genesis laser pass through the toenail to the fungus underneath. The fungus is irradiated without any damage to the surrounding nail or skin. The new GenesisPlus™ laser system has also been cleared by Health Canada for the treatment of toenail fungus.

« After seeing hundreds of patients over the last 20 years, I have first-hand experience with people that were upset with the results from the anti-fungal drugs and creams. They would spend hundreds of dollars and endure many months of treatment, and the fungus was still actively expanding. Or worse, drug side effects would force them to stop treatment, leaving them feeling hopeless. It was frustrating for me, too, but there was no better option. I wanted to offer my patients a treatment that worked. » Dr Michel Bourque DPM

Is the laser treatment painful?

The laser light beam does not harm the nail or surrounding skin. Patients may experience discomfort from the heat the laser generates.

What is the duration of treatment?

The appointment usually takes less than an hour. We suggest 4 treatments, a month apart between each treatment.

Is this laser treatment safe?

We only use laser technologies that have been cleared by Health Canada. Discoloration of your nail may appear temporarily, but no adverse reaction have been associated with laser treatment.

Can I walk after the treatment?

Yes – the treatment does not harm you in any way. You will be able to put on your shoes and walk out of the office, just as well as you walked in.

Can I put nail polish during treatment ?

Pedicures are not recommended for twenty- four hours after laser treatment.  Due to the improper disinfection practices associated with traditional spa pedicures and cross-contamination, waterless pedicures are available at our clinic upon request.  We also supply anti-fungal polish that has been approved for use by the American Podiatric Medical Association.

Will the fungus come back?

The laser treatment effectively kills Trichophyton rubrum, the primary pathogen causing toenail fungus, but patients need to guard against reinfection. Reinfection with toenail fungus may be acquired anywhere from your environment, for example, in damp areas such as public swimming pools. Speak to your Podiatrist to understand how to prevent toenail fungus from reoccurring.

How does this laser treatment compare to other toenail fungus treatments?

Traditional treatments such as nail trimming, topical medicine, oral medicine or nail removal have significant drawbacks. Nail trimming does not treat the fungus. Topical medicines need to be applied for 12-24 months and have a low success rate. Oral medicines are taken for 3 months but can cause liver or kidney problems. Genesis plus laser is a quick, easy, safe, effective procedure that treats the fungus at the source.
